You're totally right in that it seems initially that people like us, programmers and the like, have been really really enthusiastic about the Eigenharps... I hope more primary musicians pick it up :)Tenebroushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15154845403074649086noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2891627082901013174.post-59846356579021844472010-05-10T22:00:36.029-07:002010-05-10T22:00:36.029-07:00Thx for the comments guys.

Somehow though it does inspire a little thought process about how we interact with our instruments which is interesting to me.barnonehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05740375373550609936noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2891627082901013174.post-63418969502546711282010-05-10T00:28:36.981-07:002010-05-10T00:28:36.981-07:00Great write-up, comrade.
Vagueness isn't real...Great write-up, comrade.
Vagueness isn't really vague at all though, in my mind. A piano doesn't have any unequivocal way of sounding - we know how it sounds because we've come across it before. hence vagueness == departure from the norm. The eigenharp kinda sorta makes sense, because it is layed out like an instrument that we may have come across before, in a lot of ways. And that shapes the way you play it, and it sets up boundaries for what will and can be done on it.
The monome is a deliberate departure from the preconceived, and I really like that about it. No Rosetta stone, no normative layout. It's its own. I think if the eigen people had dared to leave off the breath controller, then the approach would have been a lot different.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08295705198852251565noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2891627082901013174.post-26592179772746262022010-05-08T02:21:04.149-07:002010-05-08T02:21:04.149-07:00Excellent post. Over the past few years, when I've been writing music purely in Cubase, I've found that I've become a lot less tolerent of vagueness or unpredictability in the stuff I do. I think this makes the music sound less natural, makes it sound more 'forced' and programmatic. I'm very much enjoying the vagueness of the Pico and I'm starting to learn how to take advantage of that again.Tenebroushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15154845403074649086noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2891627082901013174.post-63024381254633802332010-05-02T06:35:48.353-07:002010-05-02T06:35:48.353-07:00I have always been amazed by most controllers in t...I have always been amazed by most controllers in that they impress me as being little more than toys, far below the quality of an actual musical instrument. I suppose part of that comes from the culture of the computer generation. Controllers are not instruments but a collection of keys tied to a computer program.

I recently bought a Pico and what first impressed me before even playing it was that it did feel like a musical instrument. I was especially impressed by the keys that moved back and forth. Part of the magic for me of playing a music instrument is how it responds to you. There is a kind of two way feeback loop between listening to what you sound like and the feel of the instrument. This is what I experience with the Pico. It's a positive sign that things are changing in the musical world and that instrument should be instruments and not extensions of computer keyboards.Lux_Seekerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14404127282365177480noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2891627082901013174.post-17299934588595328162010-01-12T23:08:14.337-08:002010-01-12T23:08:14.337-08:00I'm about to crack and order an Alpha .. even ...I'm about to crack and order an Alpha .. even thought I entered the competition :-)

I'm in a band with my girlfriend, so if I should win the competition then we'd be able to play two Eigenharps on stage!
